Summer season brings new flavors of ice cream

Collegian Staff Writer

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!

A delicious frozen treat is perfect on a hot summer day and a great way to wind down on a warm summer night.

Whether it's the sound of the ice cream truck or a favorite flavor dripping down your chin, ice cream is often a part of many summer memories.

It's no secret that ice cream is more refreshing to have in the summer, Mark Zorzie (junior-labor and industrial relations) said.

"I like to try new flavors -- something I haven't had before -- something that has a mixture of a lot of things," Zorzie said.

Some good news for local ice cream lovers like Zorzie: Ice cream shops in State College will soon release new flavors to satisfy sweet cravings.

"This coming summer we're going to be providing actually four or five new [flavors]," University Creamery manager Tom Palchak said.

Some of the new flavors that will be offered are French vanilla, cafe latte and cafe mocha. There will also be a Nestlé Toll House cookie ice cream and a Butterfinger ice cream, Palchak said.

"These have been worked on very closely with the Nestlé Corporation. They are actually outstanding flavor profiles," he said. "We have really stretched the boundaries of what inclusions can be in ice cream and still have the texture and mouthful that people expect."

These flavors should be available by the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, Palchak said. The only thing that might complicate things is the Creamery's move to its new location in the Food Science Building, he said.

"The move should start to take place between the months of May and June," Palchak said. "It's going to be a pretty exciting summer here in the Department of Food Science."

Cold Stone Creamery, 321 E. Beaver Ave., will also offer new treats for the summer.

Cotton candy is a summer flavor that will make a return appearance, and butter pecan has recently been added to the flavor repertoire.

Many Penn State students are eager to try new flavors of ice cream that local stores offer for summer.

"We have the cotton candy made, but we're waiting on our mango and bubblegum flavors," Charlotte Jackson, Cold Stone Creamery general manager, said. "Within the next couple weeks those are coming."

Cold Stone is also doing a promotion called "Friends Don't Let Friends Eat Grocery Store Ice Cream." With each purchase of a 48-ounce bucket of ice cream, customers receive a free T-shirt that says the promotion's tagline.

Ben & Jerry's, 124 S. Allen St., will offer fresh flavors for summer and has seven new pint flavors already available.

"We should have the 'Jamaican Me Crazy' hopefully by the end of the month. 'Sublime Key Lime Pie' will be the June flavor," Dan Havrilla, Ben & Jerry's general manager, said. "As far as the frozen beverages, it's going to be a strawberry-lemonade smoothie and a lemonade splash that goes through the summer."

Penn State students said they are looking forward to enjoying ice cream as the weather gets warmer.

"Ice cream's a cool treat," Beth Harvie (freshman-biology) said. "I think I'd be willing to try new flavors."

Harvie said she definitely eats more ice cream in the summertime because of the hot weather.

"I think it's better to have something cold when it's warm out," Katie Prichard (sophomore-kinesiology) said. "I like to try new flavors, but I have a favorite depending on where I go."

For those who prefer to stick with tradition, your flavor buds still have a chance for ice-cold, creamy fulfillment. Along with innovative ice cream flavors, each location will still have its usual favorites to offer.

People should be warned that with more ice cream consumed in the summer, dreaded ice cream headaches are more likely to occur. This is true for the month of July, which is National Ice Cream Month. Sunday, July 16, is National Ice Cream Day.
