Yesterday's weather wasn't much better. Light rain began to fall just after Penn State starter Aaron Markowitz left the game with the Lions ahead 9-5 in the fourth inning. When reliever Steve Cline left the mound after the seventh inning with the score 11-5, the precipitation was steady, forcing most fans from the stands.
Penn State coach Robbie Wine was happy with the product on the field, though.
"It was a good day for us," Wine said, but added he would have liked to get more pitchers from what has been a shaky bullpen into the game.
Markowitz, who was moved to the bullpen two weekends ago, got the start, though his role as a reliever is still defined. Yesterday, he gave up five runs over the first four innings.
"You could tell he was working on things, and not just trying to get the hitter out either," Wine said. "He was worrying about mechanics. He was out there talking to himself. Hopefully, he can work through that and learn from it and be ready to go this weekend [vs. Indiana]."
Wine said shortstop Scott Gaffney, who took the mound for an inning of relief against Michigan State two weekends ago, may see more pitching time in upcoming games.
"We're to the point now, we're just going to do what it takes to win," Wine said. "We've already built up our arm strength, and all that stuff is already behind us. Now it's a matter of shutting people down and winning."
Offensively against the Bisons, the Lions generated 18 hits, nine of the doubles, helping to score more than 10 runs for the sixth time in the last 10 games. The Lions lost the four games in which they did not score at least 10 runs, two of which came against Northwestern last weekend.
During that series, some players like Gaffney and first baseman Cory Wine were struggling at the plate, but yesterday's win put their minds at ease, at least for now.
"This game really helped out," said Cory Wine, who went 4-for-5 with three doubles and 2 RBI.
"It was a relaxing game for us," Robbie Wine said. "We just went about our business."
Hello? Diamond-Dry?
Between the seventh and eight innings, some Penn State players transformed into the Penn State grounds crew. Pitcher Craig Clark and assistant coach Zac Cazzelle spread Diamond-Dry on the pitcher's mound while Gaffney and left fielder Lance Thompson worked the area around home plate.
"We we're looking for [the Diamond-Dry] for a couple innings. We couldn't find it," Robbie Wine said, adding the umpires weren't planning to end the game early despite the rain.

Wine coached third base in place of assistant coach Eric Folmar, who was in Georgia on a recruiting trip ... Catcher Aaron Greenfield started the game for the James Spinelli, who is still nursing an injured shoulder ... To start the ninth inning, utility infielder Landon Nakata ran towards the direction of shortstop but ended up playing third base. "He's just a guy that you can say, 'Hey, go play somewhere,' and he'll go out and do it," Cory Wine said. ... To add insult to injury, Bucknell left the game in two mini-buses and a Toyota sport utility vehicle.
