Quinn's support of Portland shows ignorance of issue
I applaud the recent confirmation by Penn State of women's basketball coach Rene Portland's violation of the university's anti-discrimination policy. What appalls me is the lack of interest in the case by at least one of the team's future freshmen ("Incoming Lady Lion is behind Portland," April 20). Meggan Quinn proclaims she will play for the Lady Lions next year because the claim against Portland "is not true." At least Quinn was honest in admitting that she has not kept up with the news regarding either the university investigation or the pending federal discrimination lawsuit. It can be hard to find fault with the "sweet lady" who seeks you out and offers you a scholarship to play college basketball. A coach has a great deal of influence over the team dynamics as well as an individual player's success and well being. Perhaps it is time for more introspection regarding what kind of an environment we are paying Portland a six-figure salary to maintain. Is it an environment of teamwork, good sportsmanship and tolerance? Or is it one where being good at what you do will never make up for the crime of your perceived sexuality? Angela Marie Larson
