Movin' On rocks in rain
Despite low temperatures and rain, rapper Talib Kweli and punk rockers RX Bandits drew crowds to the HUB lawn.

Even though Movin' On has been cursed with rain the past couple of years, that has not stopped loyal fans from gathering on the HUB lawn to rock out free of charge.

"This is just typical State College weather," Karen Becki (senior-recreation, park and tourism management) said standing under an umbrella in the pouring rain at the start of the show on Saturday with about 50 other onlookers.

The show started at noon with Penn State Battle of the Bands winner Katelyn & Maria and continued until rapper Talib Kweli closed the event at midnight.

Movin' On Director Michelle Ricketts said she was pleased with the turnout, especially for the headliner.

"I think the rain and the Blue and White game may have affected
the turnout," Ricketts said. "But overall, the day was pretty smooth."

Juliet Howard, headquarters chairwoman for Movin' On, said the biggest turnout was for Kweli, with about 1,000 people packed on the HUB lawn. The second biggest was for RX Bandits, with about 200 spectators.

"Everyone was so stoked to see Talib Kweli," Howard said. "For the last 20 minutes, he brought dancers on stage, and everyone really enjoyed themselves."

H.B. Zeff (freshman-division of undergraduate studies) said he came to see Kweli but caught the end of Dilation, which he thought played for way too long.

"Most rap concerts are just guys screaming into a microphone," Zeff said. "But Talib Kweli sounded really good, and he started a break-dance party on stage."

Talib Kweli performs as Movin' On's headlining act Saturday night.

Despite some controversy with the

headliner choice, the turnout matched other years, event organizers said.

"I was kind of disappointed with the headliner," Mike Toret (freshman-physics and mathematics) said. "I was hoping for more of a rock act."

Howard said her favorite acts were RX Bandits, Kweli and Gym Class Heroes.

"Gym Class Heroes put on a killer show," Howard said. "If they had played later in the day, they would have had a much bigger turnout."

Kassie Blashaw (junior-human development and family studies) said Katelyn & Maria was one of her favorite bands of the day because the group had a really unique sound.

"This is my first time to Movin' On," Blashaw said. "Besides it being a crappy day, it has been really exciting."

Tents were also set up on the HUB lawn where the bands sold merchandise and Movin' On organizers gave away more than 300 shirts.

Liz Rowe (freshman-advertising) volunteered at the event by setting up the stages and equipment.

"If it had not been raining then there may have been more people at the side stages," Rowe said. "The people who really wanted to be here came out."
