Eating contest highlights national poverty problem
People write into The Daily Collegian to advocate for various groups of living things: furry animals, edible animals, etc. I am writing to advocate for people who are poor. I read with interest the article about the "Fat Bitch" eating contest in which students competitively gorged themselves on food in front of a live audience ("Sandwich-eating contestants battle for $1,000," April 20). Readers should know that the maximum food stamp benefit for one person in Pennsylvania is $149.00 per month. This means a person who receives food stamps spends no more than $4.91 per day to feed him or herself. The eating contest illustrates that some college students are so privileged that they can waste food for fun. I hope people think long and hard about whether they want to cheer on such an activity. I, for one, refuse to give my business to any establishment that supports competitive eating. Crystal Stryker
