Letter to the Editor
Many illegal immigrants provide key contributions

This is in response to Dave Swiderski's, "Decision to play race card hurts credibility of liberals," April 19. I agree that the "race card" should not have been used in the discussion of illegal immigration. However, his comment that implied that all illegal immigrants were Mexican was quite offensive.

Is it anti-American to be liberal or just to want everyone on campus to be treated fairly? Illegal immigration is a serious problem. I agree with Swiderski and I'm glad that some of us are educated enough to discuss it in an open forum. I just wonder what kind of message people are sending about this country when they make comments like his.

Being first generation American born I know what my parents had to go through to become citizens. They weren't free loaders; they worked every day of their lives in this country. They followed all the laws, but maybe some of them need to be changed if there are so many people that will fight to live here, work here and make better lives for themselves.

Illegal immigrants contribute to this country in more ways than you probably realize. Maybe it's anti-American to not want to find ways to improve the laws to accept "the tired, the poor and huddled masses yearning to breathe free."
