PSU wrong to reprimand coach for baseless claims

I was saddened to see news about women's basketball coach Rene Portland's unfair sanctions in the news ("PSU finds Portland in violation of policy," April 19). Having known Portland for years, I can personally speak to her character and her warmth as an individual. It is a shame that such baseless charges were brought about against this leader in our community. We've seen no proof of accusations and absolutely no validity of these charges stand up in the real world legal system.

I am publicly asking for the dismissal and/or resignation of Ken Lehrman, who conducted the investigation as head of the Affirmative Action Office. If this individual had any real evidence we would all be abreast of it and instead we have Penn State's version of justice brought about against Portland. I also ask all alumni, students and Penn State sports fans to join with me in calling Penn State President Graham Spanier's office to ask for Lehrman's removal from his position and the immediate dismissal of these baseless charges and a stop to the sanctions.

Thank you, Rene Portland for being a leader and a great coach in our community over the years and I along with so many others look forward to seeing you on the court for years to come.
