Decision to keep Portland sends improper message
As a Penn State alumn, I am completely disgusted with the current situation surrounding women's basketball coach Rene Portland ("PSU finds Portland in violation of policy," April 19). It absolutely infuriates me that university officials are allowing her to remain on staff as the head coach, despite their finding that she violated university policy. This decision sends the message that Penn State only pays lip service to its anti-discrimination policy and couldn't care less about actually creating a hate-free environment for its students. This message is unacceptable, especially for an institution whose main purpose is to educate tomorrow's leaders and coaches. The fact that Penn State continues to stand by Portland even though she continues to deny any wrongdoing is especially despicable. Furthermore, I find it almost humorous that university officials believe that a monetary fine and a professional development course will change Portland's attitudes. It appears that Penn State can cure social ills that have perpetually plagued our society with a simple professional seminar. That must be one hell of a seminar. Poorya Nayerahmadi
