Midseason turnaround gains steam vs. Akron

Collegian Staff Writer

Mother nature nixed the first potential pounding of the Akron Zips and unreliable umpires nearly caused a second cancellation, but the rebounding Penn State softball team finally got their shots in defeating the Zips 9-0 last night.

The Nittany Lions (28-11, 3-7 Big Ten) continued a mid-season rebound, winning their seventh straight against Akron (19-18) with a masterful pitching performance by senior Missy Beseres and a two-run home run by Leigh Murray. The top seven hitters in the lineup all reached base on hits and Jen Williams contributed a pair of hits and a pair of RBI in the victory.

The nine runs were the most the Lions had put up in well over a month. Along with the victory on the scoreboard, Penn State also walked away with a mental victory. With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, the Lions called upon the power of Thor, the god of lightning. The result was a two out flash-bang rally that produced five runs, two of which came from the Murray home run. The six batter hit chain ended the game well before the seventh.

Murray was more than humble about her home run saying it was unintentional, as she was just trying to protect the plate and make up for earlier appearances.

"She made a good pitch, I guess I just got lucky. I was trying not to strike out three times," Murray said. "Their field, they have a pretty tall wall. Maybe the wind was carrying out there I don't know."

Petrini said it was difficult to estimate the total distance of the home run because the fences are covered in screen to protect the field from wind.

"It was out, that's the important thing," Petrini said.

Beseres, who retired 11 of the 15 outs by strikeout, has pitched 24.1 innings in the last 5 games. She said she enjoyed the run support, as well as the two-inning break to rest her arm.

"[My arm] hasn't been [hurting]. Games like today, playing only five innings, are nice. I've been taking care of [my arm] and icing so it's not a concern to me."

The series in Ohio was initially scheduled as a doubleheader on April 4, but bad weather conditions bumped the game to a midweek game rescheduled for last night.

The only problem was no one remembered to tell the umpires.

" They didn't get there until after four o clock. We decided to just play one because there are no lights," Petrini said.

Murray said playing only one game may have been a blessing in disguise.

"To be honest, I think we're kind of glad for the break. We scheduled eight games this week so maybe dropping one isn't the worst thing in terms of that," Murray said. "It's good that we at least got one in because we really generated some offense and that'll be good to take into this weekend."

Put me in coach, I'm ready to bat

With a four run lead heading into the 5th inning, and already the star of the game, Beseres was looking to add to her statistics totals with some offense.

Beseres said she fantasizes of taking some hacks when the team produces runs in mass quantities as they did yesterday.

"I always ask if I'm ever going to get to hit and she always says no, but maybe by the time I'm done she'll give me a shot," Beseres said laughing. "It's kind of an on-going joke."

Beseres said she rarely has to ask coach anymore because of her unofficial agent on the team.

"I think Ashley [Esparza] actually does it a lot more for me, she's kind of my spokesperson," Beseres said. "Usually when they have leads like today, it's usually just laughed off."

Although Beseres will forever wait for the day she gets a chance to swing, she said she understands her coach's decision.

"I haven't hit in five years, so that's probably the main reason, but [potential injury] is probably a close second," Beseres said.
