Legions of fans to set up tents again

For The Collegian

During the 2005 Penn State football season, dozens of tents were pitched in front of Gate A outside Beaver Stadium, creating what is now known as Paternoville. During those campouts, hundreds of students put in their time and effort to make sure they got the closest seats to watch the team that had, for some, been the source of all their joy during the fall.

For one group of campers known as Lydell's Army, the 2005 season doesn't officially come to its end until Penn State hosts its Blue-White weekend tomorrow and Saturday. To show its support for the Nittany Lions, the group plans to camp out for the weekend.

Lydell's Army had camped out for every game this past season, including the non-conference games against South Florida, Cincinnati and Central Michigan. Its members even camped out for Blue-White weekend during previous years, so when it came time to decide whether or not to do again, the decision was quick and unanimous.

Junior Brad Wilson said he and the other members of his group were all for pitching their tents one last time.

"We all sat down and talked about whether or not we should camp out for Blue and White." Wilson said. "It was a no-brainer. Penn State football means a lot to us, and we want to continue to show support for the team all year 'round."

The group of Lydell's Army was started in support of freshman Lydell Sargeant, and there were also number of other groups wanting to show support for different players.

"Yeah, up at Paternoville there would be a ton of people forming groups for the players," Wilson said. "It seemed like almost every position had a fan club, from Deon's Butlers to M-Rob's Mob and even Kapinos' Korner. It was great to see such a strong fan base."

With each of these groups braving the weather, making detailed signs and standing in line for hours, camping out in front of Beaver Stadium gave students a chance to show their thanks and encouragement for the team.

Although the main purpose of camping out is to get front-row seats, it has become a tradition to sleep outside the stadium and enjoy being around other Penn State fans. When the group sleeps out for the Blue-White game, it plans to just relax and hopefully enjoy the warm weather.

"It'll be nice because we'll be camping out in April instead of November," sophomore Michael Urbansky said.

Along with hoping for a favorable forecast, Lydell's Army plans to toss around the football, fire up the grill, close out their enjoyment on the 2005 season and begin looking forward to another successful season.

"To me," Urbanksy said, "that's what camping is all about."

While camping out to be a part of Paternoville in the fall was one way to show support for the team, some people think of the whole idea of camping out for the Blue-White game to be ridiculous. But despite the criticism the group receives about camping out for a scrimmage, members of the group say they do it because it's fun.

"We would have people come by and honk their horns and yell stupid stuff at us, but we didn't care." Urbansky said. "All that we wanted was to have a good time and be able to sit front row for the games."

The group hopes other people will come out and camp outside of the stadium Friday, but regardless, Urbansky said Lydell's Army will be at their usual spot, right in front of Gate A.

"I can't speak for all of the other groups," he said, "but I can tell you that we will be out there, camping and cooking and playing."
