Nearly five weeks after falling from a sixth-floor dorm window and sustaining injuries to his back, arms and pelvic area, Penn State student Ryan Walton, 19, of Harleysville, has returned home for rehabilitation, his father said yesterday.
"He's got about six months of rehab," said his father, who asked that his name not be released. "He'll be back to about 95 percent. He probably won't play ice hockey anymore [or] baseball anymore."
When asked if Walton was in good spirits, his father responded, "He seems to be."
Walton's roommate in Porter Hall, Thomas Abraham, said he had a conversation with Walton on the phone yesterday, and Walton seemed to be in a good mood.
"He sounded normal," Abraham said, adding that he was not sure when Walton would be coming back to school.
"He didn't say anything about school," Abraham said
"I would assume that he would come back, but I guess that's his parents' decision," he added.
Walton's location and condition had been uncertain until now because Altoona Hospital, where he was flown by helicopter after the fall, could not release his condition because of federal laws.
Walton's six-story fall occurred during a party in 646 Beaver Hall on March 17.
Shortly before midnight, Penn State University Police arrived at the room, finding "a significant amount of beer and liquor," according to a Penn State statement.
As police questioned partygoers individually in the hallway, Walton tied together a bed sheet and blankets, looping one end around a bedpost, and climbed out the window.
He "did not even make it to the fifth floor before he fell to the ground," landing in grass, dirt, and gravel on the northwest side of Beaver Hall in the Pollock Halls quad area, according to a Penn State statement.
On Tuesday, Walton and 12 others who were at the party when the incident occurred were issued citations for underage drinking.
Walton's citation states that he "attempted to flee from a sixth-floor window when officers arrived on scene."
Five additional citations were issued the night of the incident for furnishing alcohol to minors, according to the university police log.
University police Assistant Director Tyrone Parham said Tuesday he expects citations to be issued soon to other individuals who furnished alcohol for the party.
