Printing details of assault wrong decision for Collegian
There are a few items that need to be addressed concerning the article, "Sexual assault charge thrown out," April 14. First and foremost, the amount of detail published about the events that occurred is absolutely inappropriate, regardless of the survivor's supposed anonymity. As a survivor myself, I would be appalled if every student on campus were reading about and discussing the details of what happened to me that night. Knowing that the survivor reported an acquaintance rape and other issues regarding the case is very appropriate, but the details of the assault she reported should be kept private. As a campus community, we need to be sensitive to the other survivors who may be considering reporting incidences of sexual assault. And we also need to be aware of how the publication of these very private details would affect their decisions to come forward or to remain silent in fear that everyone will know about what happened to them. Also, to address the actual quote from Scott Paxson's lawyer, I must tell our students that consent is not the absence of a "no" but the presence of an uncoerced and unthreatened "yes." Both women and men must normalize consent by asking for it in any sexual encounter. No one wants to be accused of rape, and no one should have to survive rape. And one last thing, the "heat of passion" is never an excuse for having sex with an unwilling person. Dallas Garner
