Letter to the Editor
New segregation bill ignores many current school issues

I currently live and has previously taught in Omaha, Neb., and my wife now teaches at one of the "minority" schools that would be affected by this legislation, so I can say that there really is no possible way this division could make the populations any more segregated than they are ("School Segregation: Bill would negate decades of progress," April 18). That is, even the schools in the heart of the "minority" areas have significant white populations, while those in the "white" areas have considerable populations of black students. It is not likely that this law, as stupid as it is, will alter that.

To me, the bigger unfairness here is that the school systems really are equitably treated as far as teachers (white and of color in all schools) equipment, facilities and resources, but it is claimed (by state Sen. Ernie Chambers) that minority schools are denied resources. That is patently false and an insult to Omaha teachers.
