New royalty presides over PSU greek life

Maybe it was Chetan Shah's smooth dance moves in his Eastern and Western fusion dance that impressed the judges.

Or maybe it was his personal Orange Bowl trophy made from an upside-down lampshade and a lamppost during the Penn State/Greek Pride portion.

Whatever impressed the six judges at last night's Greek Pageant made them name the Delta Sigma Iota fraternity member Mr. Greek 2006.

"This will be a great opportunity to serve the greek community," Shah said.

This year's first Greek Pageant was a spin-off from last year's Mr. Greek Pageant. The pageant consisted of three portions: Penn State/Greek Pride, talent and question and answer.

Each of the 10 contestants, five fraternity members and five sorority members, were chosen after his or her chapter submitted an application and went through an interview process, Greek Week Programming Chairwoman Hadley Spanier said.

Shah performed a break-dancing segment in the talent portion for about 500 cheering greek members and intermixed some Eastern dance using props and Western hip-hop music.

During the question-and-answer portion, he noted his favorite Penn State memory as being a dancer in the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon.

"I can't put [that experience] into words," he added.

Laura Nolan was named Miss Greek 2006 as she was crowned with golden ivy and received a white sash, a bouquet of roses and a $200 check. Shah also received these prizes.

Nolan wore a blue toga with the PSU and Gamma Phi Beta symbols and gold strap sandals, carrying a plush Penn State football and blue and white pompom for the pride portion.

Chetan Shah (senior-finance), a member of Delta Sigma Iota fraternity, is declared Mr. Greek 2006 at last night's Greek Pageant.

She also performed "Wannabe" by the Spice Girls with four Gamma Phi Beta sorority members, dressing as "Sporty Spice" for the talent portion.

Nolan said she enjoyed the event, and it made her proud to see all of the Penn State greek chapters at the pageant to celebrate the greek community.

"Being greek is one of the best things I ever did," Nolan said.

Another crowd-pleasing talent performance was Miss Greek 2006 first runner-up Sima Patel's cheerleader skit. Patel and a male partner dressed like Penn State cheerleaders and pretended to cheer on the football team, using the famous cheer "U-G-L-Y you ain't got no alibi..." and other similar cheers.

Patel, who is from Texas, said she chose to study at Penn State because she loved the student body when she visited the campus once while visiting friends in Pittsburgh.

"I was in awe with it," Patel said.

The audience helped Mr. Greek 2006 first runner-up Scott Walters and his band during the talent portion as they played "Hey Baby" and the "Let's Go PSU" chant songs. Walters played the trumpet and encouraged the crowd to sing. He also encouraged the crowd during the pride portion by doing one-handed pushups in his red toga and Nittany Lion hat.

"This is the epitome ... greek life and being a part of this great school," Walters said in the question-and-answer portion.
