Fall victim faces drinking charge
Ryan P. Walton, who fell from a sixth-story Beaver Hall window, has been cited for underage drinking.

A Penn State student who fell from a sixth-floor dorm window March 17 has been charged with underage consumption of alcoholic beverages.

According to the citation, Ryan P. Walton, 19, of Harleysville, drank in his own room in Porter Hall before going to a party in Beaver Hall.

The citation states that Walton "attempted to flee from a sixth-floor window when officers arrived on scene." His blood-alcohol content was 0.156, according to the citation, which also indicates that he will be fined $349.50.

The condition and location of Walton are not known. Altoona Hospital, where he was flown by helicopter immediately after the fall, is not permitted to release his condition because of federal laws.

Walton's mother was reached by phone but said she would not yet comment about her son's condition or location.

Ryan McDonough (freshman-history), Lydia Krefta (freshman-engineering science), Christopher Faught, 19, of Export, and Jason Saxton, 19, of Export, who were also issued underage drinking citations stemming from the party, refused to comment when asked about Walton's condition and location.

Walton was at a party in 646 Beaver Hall, a supplemental room that is home to five students, when Penn State University Police arrived and found "a significant amount of beer and liquor" in the room, according to a Penn State statement.

Witnesses said that as police began to call each of the 22 partygoers into the hallway individually to be interviewed and issued a citation, Walton knotted a bed sheet and blanket together, tying one end to a bed, and used the makeshift rope to climb out the window.

The day after Walton's fall, Penn State reported that he had suffered significant internal injuries and injuries to his back, arms and pelvic area.

University police Assistant Director Tyrone Parham said that although it may seem strange that Walton received a citation, he was just as responsible as the others in the room.

"We have a zero-tolerance policy toward underage drinking in the dorms," Parham said. "It's unfortunate that he is hurt, but he still broke the law."

In total, 13 citations for purchase, consumption, possession or transportation of liquor or malt or brewed beverages were issued yesterday in connection with the party that night -- four of them to Penn State students, the other nine to visitors of the university.

Four students and one visitor were cited the night of the incident for furnishing alcohol to minors, according to the university police log.

Parham said that today or tomorrow, more citations would be issued to those who furnished the alcohol for the party.
