A Penn State student who was seriously injured after he fell from a second-floor balcony March 31 is beginning rehabilitation after his discharge from Geisinger Medical Center in Danville Friday.

Cory Wincek, 20, was leaning against the railing of an apartment balcony at University Terrace Apartments, 825 Bellaire Ave., when the railing gave way. He fell about 15 feet onto a paved parking lot.

Wincek was originally listed in critical condition after being flown to Geisinger Medical Center the night of the incident. Geisinger Medical Center spokeswoman Stephanie Derk confirmed yesterday that Wincek was discharged Friday.

His sister, Courteney Wincek, 23, said yesterday that he is beginning his rehabilitation at McGee Rehabilitation Hospital in Philadelphia, but she would not elaborate on his current condition. "We don't want to comment too much," she said. "All we really wanted to say is that he has been transferred. ... Keep him in your thoughts and prayers."

Tim Knisley, a senior fire and housing inspector for the Centre Region Code Administration, is awaiting an engineer's review of the railing to determine why it gave way. He said he is hoping for the report this week. "Once we receive it, we're going to need time to review before we make any public release," Knisley said.

In the meantime, the company that owns University Terrace, The Apartment Store, has stated its intention to install a completely new railing system.
