Team splits weekend

Collegian Staff Writer

The Penn State women's tennis team swallowed a painful fifth loss in a row as it fell to No. 33 Iowa, 4-3 on Friday night. Still, the well-played match left little room for regrets and complaints from the coaches and players.

That positive feeling carried through to yesterday's match against Minnesota, which the Nittany Lions won 5-2 at Sarni Tennis Center.

"The team is feeling pretty good about itself," junior Sasha Abraham said after the Iowa match. "Having lost to Iowa easily in the previous years, a 4-3 match against them is something we should feel a lot better about."

Penn State women's tennis coach Buffy Baker said her team played a great match and competed to its level of effort.

"We battled down the line against a very good team," she said. "It was good loss for us, and that's something that I think you have to remind your players."

Keeping up team morale paid off for Baker and the Lions in the comeback win against the Golden Gophers. They kept the same intense level of play as the competition on Friday, but this time Penn State got the W.

The Lions won the doubles point to gain the advantage and took care of business from there.

"This team broke quicker than Iowa, and we were able to do to Minnesota what Iowa did to us," Baker said.

According to Abraham, each player had her own way of playing and winning matches.

"A lot of them played well Friday and kept up that level today," she said. "The last home match ended on a good note."

The Lions have a tough schedule ahead of them as they take on Michigan and Michigan State next weekend. Baker said the win will belong to the team that stays focused on the course while balancing emotions and hectic travels.
