PSU student shot to death in Phila.

A Penn State senior was shot to death over the weekend while he was visiting family in his hometown of Philadelphia.

Tyrone Myers, 22, died early Saturday morning from multiple gunshot wounds to his back and abdomen, Philadelphia Police Department Sgt. Anthony McFadden said.

Police responded to the call at about 4:30 a.m. on the 2000 block of Jutson Way, McFadden said.

Myers, who is from North Philadelphia, was pronounced dead upon arrival at Temple University Hospital. McFadden said the department is still investigating the incident, and there are no suspects. His death has been ruled a homicide.

Myers was majoring in biobehavioral health and was scheduled to graduate in August.

Raheem Wood, Myers' cousin who lived with him at The Pointe, 501 Vairo Blvd., said he could not believe it when he received a phone call telling him that his close friend and cousin had been killed.

Wood (senior-health and human development) said his cousin, who went home to attend his aunt's funeral, was shot after he got out of his car near his aunt's house.

He added that he didn't think the shooting was in connection with a robbery because nothing of Myers' was taken.

"He was just a fun guy, always wanting to make people laugh," Wood said. "Our family is heartbroken right now."

He said Myers' funeral will be Saturday in North Philadelphia, but he was unsure of specific details.

Wood said the second he heard about the shooting, he immediately left State College and headed to Philadelphia.

Yesterday, two of Myers' close friends, Rob Joseph (sophomore-criminal justice) and David Joseph (senior-journalism), drove from Penn State to be with Myers' family.

"How could someone shoot him four times in his back?" David Joseph asked. "He was just such a nice guy; he had so many friends."

Simon Haileab (sophomore-political science) said he was shocked when he heard about the death of his friend.

"I just talked to him not long before it happened," he said. "We played basketball and hung out in the HUB all the time. He was such a great friend."
