Letter to the Editor
Horowitz's claim of bias untrue for senior lecturer

I'm really curious to know what kind of professor the College Republicans would want to teach a race and ethnic relations class ("Horowitz to discuss academic freedom," April 13).

Do they want someone who does not encourage intelligent debate? Do they want someone who believes racism has been eradicated and that everyone has an equal shot at attaining the "American Dream" because free will governs all? I took Sociology 119 (Race and Ethnic Relations) my sophomore year and I would hardly say I came out of the class as a Sam Richards clone. Instead, I was enlightened about issues and events of which I was never aware. I heard a range of viewpoints and personal stories from both Richards and my fellow students in the 500-person class.

It's a shame that in 2006 someone who dedicates his or her life to educating people and improving race relations is considered to be "dangerous." You do not have to share every viewpoint a professor has, and most of them will tell you they do not want you to.

You should have an open mind and use your analytical skills to form your own opinions with the information they provide you.
