Students vote on Peachy Paterno
The Out with Peachy Paterno group collected 266 votes to replace the ice cream flavor.

It's not just ice cream a group of students wants to replace -- it also wants to oust Penn State football coach Joe Paterno.

About 15 students met outside the Forum Building yesterday to lobby against Peachy Paterno, the ice cream flavor that the group's press release said "fails to live up to the loyal expectations of these loyal students -- just like the coach whose name it bears."

The ballots only allowed students to vote against the flavor, not for it. The group said 266 people cast votes saying they would like to see the ice cream replaced.

When asked, group members declined to elaborate on the problems they have with Paterno or the reason for wanting the ice cream flavor changed. The reason for the secrecy of the campaign -- and its ambiguity -- remains unclear.

"It is mainly about the ice cream, but it is also about [Penn State football coach Joe Paterno]. We have a problem with both," Claudia Eckel, a member of the Out with Peachy Paterno campaign, said. "There has been a lot of hype about JoePa this year, and we have problems with both the coach and the ice cream."

Earlier in the week, two opposing groups -- Out with Peachy Paterno and Ode to Peachy Paterno -- dispersed fliers around campus about the ice cream flavor. Though the groups are advocating opposing views, both have the same acronym, e-mail address and blog address. The reason for the shared space is to reduce "slander about the other side," according to an anonymous e-mail message received earlier this week.

Students vote to retire the flavor.

"It is not a direct stab at the coach," said Stephanie Springgay, assistant professor of art and education and women's studies. "We were just curious about student response."

Springgay originally said the only role she would play in the Out with Peachy Paterno campaign was to fax the group's press release. However, she was present at the election sporting an Out with Peachy Paterno shirt and campaigning to get students to vote.

Outside the Forum building yesterday, a group of students decided to spontaneously protest the Out with Peachy Paterno's initiative with homemade signs.

Those votes will be compared Saturday with election results from Ode to Peachy Paterno, group members said.

Members of Ode to Peachy Paterno were not at the voting session and could not be reached for comment yesterday. It is unclear when the pro-Peachy Paterno vote will be held.

Although Eckel said the vote was accurate, some students said they weren't informed of the election's dual purpose -- they just thought they were voting out the ice cream, not the coach.

Out with Peachy Paterno members also offered an alternative, apricot-flavored ice cream for students to sample and suggest a name for.

James Brown, assistant manager of The University Creamery, said the campaign doesn't matter -- the vote is insignificant.

"The decision to remove ice creams will not be based on the voting decision of the art class," he said.
