Creamery site to be renovated

Collegian Staff Writer

Fans of the current University Creamery will soon have to say goodbye to the Borland Lab they now know.

Yesterday, the State College Borough Planning Commission discussed upcoming Penn State construction projects, including the extensive interior and exterior renovations to the Borland Lab building, which is home to the Creamery.

The Planning Commission also discussed upgrading the lab's surrounding grounds.

The Creamery is going to be moved to a location in the new Food Science Building located further east on Curtin Road, and its old location, connected to Borland Lab, will be demolished, said Jessica Moser, interior designer at Bower Lewis Thrower Architects.

She said the plan calls for the replacement of existing windows, the creation of a public entrance in the place of the current loading dock and the construction of a third-floor room to hold mechanical equipment.

Zoning officer Herman Slaybaugh said after the construction is completed on the exterior of Borland Lab, students and faculty will have an outdoor gathering place. He also said that exterior areas of the building could be used for outdoor exhibits to show student artwork.

Moser said new plants, benches and walkways would be added to the area as well.

She added that construction on the building would begin in mid-to-late summer and should be completed by 2008.

Zoë Boniface, the Design Review Board's liaison to the Planning Commission, said the board liked the idea of retaining the older architecture of Borland Lab after the new construction. "We liked the overall approach, particularly the retention of older architecture," Boniface said.

Planning Commission member Silvi Lawrence said she was also pleased with the direction the university is taking with the project. "I want to compliment the university for restoring one of the first buildings on campus," Lawrence said. "It is wonderful to see that this building will receive new life; I'm thrilled."
