Letter to the Editor
Pedestrians, drivers should exercise caution on streets

This is in response to Brett Nadan's letter, "Caution necessary when driving around local area," April 10. I lived in State College before I came to Penn State, so I know both the drivers' and the pedestrians' sides of the story. Nadan only mentioned the pedestrians'' side; and though his concern is valid, as a driver I can say I have had more close calls with students who were too busy talking on cell phones to notice a car was coming and walked out into the street anyway.

There are also drivers who are too careless to notice students in the road, as Nadan mentioned. If you, as a pedestrian, aren't looking and the driver's not looking and there's an accident who do you think will come out better? Obviously the car.

So drivers, please be alert. But pedestrians, sorry to say, if you want to survive unscathed, be even more alert on the road. Use crosswalks and be aware of your surroundings.
