Police tell residents to lock their cars

The State College Police Department is urging State College residents to lock their unattended cars after a recent batch of thefts from cars were reported. Six separate incidents of cash and items stolen from unlocked cars on Garner Street, William Street and Ellen Avenue occurred sometime late Saturday or early Sunday.

"Until residents start locking their cars, this won't stop," State College Police Sgt. Mark Argiro said. "We can't stress how important this is."

In some instances, the cars were just rummaged through; other car owners had items such as cell phone chargers, gift cards, purses and cash stolen. Argiro said he assumes all of the incidents are related.

Student arrested for disregarding order

A 22-year-old Penn State student was arrested Sunday after he violated his protection from abuse order twice when he went to his former girlfriend's apartment on two separate occasions.

The order was issued after the girlfriend, a 20-year-old Penn State student, called the State College Police Saturday after Angel Lozada harassed her on Allen Street.

A State College Police officer went to her apartment, on the 1000 block of Pugh Street, at about 11:30 that evening to tell her the protection from abuse was granted. Shortly after the police officer left, there was a knock on the door, and she answered it because she said she assumed it was the officer again, but it was her boyfriend. He confronted her about going to the police.

Lozada returned to her apartment the following evening, but she did not open the door, police said. He was found on campus near the library and arrested for violating the protection from abuse order. Lozada was arraigned before Magisterial District Justice Daniel Hoffman and placed in Centre County Correctional facility in lieu of $50,000 straight bail.

Technology, ring stolen at apartment

A 26-year-old Penn State student reported to the State College Police Department that his apartment on the 800 block of Stratford Drive had been burglarized while he was away for the weekend. He said that when arriving at the apartment, he noticed someone had used his toilet without flushing, and CDs and video games were removed from one room and left on the kitchen counter.

Two new Xbox 360s in their boxes, seven Xbox games, a 42-inch Sony Plasma monitor, an Apple iPod and a white gold ring were stolen, totaling $3,220. A 20-inch-by-20-inch safe with an undisclosed amount of cash was also removed from the apartment, police said.

The student said he was certain he locked his door, but not his deadbolt. When he returned, the front and glass sliding doors were both locked.

The State College Police Detective Unit processed the scene and is asking anyone who noticed any suspicious activity near the area to contact the department at 234-7150.
