Class offers orchestra ensemble

For The Collegian

On any given night at 11:59, many students sit by their computers logged onto eLion, waiting for the final tick of the clock before they can race to schedule classes for next semester.

The School of Music offers many classes each semester for students looking to fill their schedules. One of these classes is MUSIC 297C, known as Sinfonietta, which is offered once a semester as an arts credit to all students -- non-music and music majors alike. The group rehearses form 8 to 9:40 p.m. once a week, finishing off the semester with a final performance showcase.

At 8 tonight, the Sinfonietta Orchestra will perform its end of the semester concert at Esber Recital Hall.

The orchestra, conducted by Katie O'Brien (graduate-orchestral conducting) and Francisco Varela (graduate-orchestral conducting), is an ensemble of non-music majors, ranging from freshmen to seniors.

"The group is really diverse, representing over 30 different majors," O'Brien said.

Francisco Varela fine-tunes the orchestra.

This is a class for students that share an interest in music, but who ordinarily might not get the chance to express it.

O'Brien said that it has been really fun to see the group grow. From last semester, the group doubled its size from 22 to 44 students.

"It takes a lot of motivation and dedication from the students and their love of music to put on the show," O'Brien said.

The ensemble consists of strings, winds, brass and percussion instruments, Varela said.

The night will consist of music from various artists, such as Schubert, Strauss and Bernstein.

"Most people will be familiar with Bernstein," O'Brien said. "[Bernstein's music] highlights music from West Side Story."

Varela said that the show is filled with beautiful melodies of classical music.
