Column fails to legitimate need for greek community

Question: How many pledges are humiliated and brainwashed into thinking that what they are about to join will make their life significantly greater. Answer: All of them, including me. Lana Ulrich, if you do not believe the greek system makes the world a better place, then why are you supporting it in the first place ("Greeks serve unique purpose at universities," April 6)?

This column makes it seem like Ulrich is advocating for division because it simply exists rather than encouraging bonding with everyone regardless of race, religious sect or background. If you think you have to join a group to fit in, then you are pathetic. Why look to join a group if you can't be yourself and love one another, which will ultimately lead to friendships and bonds?

I know this may offend people involved in these groups, but this column did not give any legitimate reasons why the greek system is beneficial to Penn State. Simply put, if Homecoming parades and free Natty Lights are all that greek life has to offer, then I guess these groups do not make the world a better place.
