A Penn State lab supervisor died yesterday morning after the van she was driving collided with another vehicle.
Elizabeth Wenrick, 33, of Weikert, was the lab supervisor in the environmental testing program in Penn State's Agricultural Analytical Services lab.
"She worked with lots of faculty, staff and researchers here at the university," Lab Director Ann Wolf said.
According to the Pennsylvania State Police press release, Wenrick was traveling west on state Route 45 near Union County at about 7 a.m. when her Chrysler Town and Country minivan swerved off the side of the road. Wenrick turned back into the lane, but she overcompensated and crossed into the eastbound lane.
She then turned quickly back into the westbound lane and began to spin around into the path of 44-year-old Douglas Dunlap's car, according to the press release.
Dunlap, of Huntingdon, who was driving a Ford truck, saw Wenrick's van in his lane and turned to the right to avoid her. He could not, and his vehicle collided with the right side of her van. Both cars stopped moving at the point of impact, the press release stated.
Wenrick was pronounced dead at the scene. Centre County Coroner Scott Sayers said she was wearing a seatbelt and died of a head trauma.
Dunlap and passenger David Rupert, 36, of Petersburg, weren't wearing seatbelts, and both sustained minor injuries. They were treated at Mount Nittany Medical Center.
Wolf said the department was informed yesterday afternoon of her death, and they were all completely shocked. She said Wenrick has worked several years at Penn State, performing different analysis environment tests for Penn State, as well as for private clients.
"She took tremendous pride in customer service," Wolf said. "She was such a joyful person and always had a smile on her face."
