"We were always wanting to do something new, to try to go as far away from where we just were," Dewolf said.
Jarrod Montague, Taproot's drummer, said that the band has evolved, but also said that some things are the same.
"There are a lot of similarities in song structure. But, every record we try to expand," Montaque said.
Richards said the songwriting process for Blue-Sky Research was a group effort.
"It's not one person [who writes the songs]... everyone definitely contributes fairly equally," Richards said.
A lot of songs written for Blue-Sky Research, but it was easy to cut it down to the ones on the album, Richards said.
"When it comes to songwriting, you have to get the s--t out of the way first," Richards said. He said he is inspired to write when he is mad or in love. He explained one song on Blue- Sky Research called "She."
"[We] took the mentality along the lines of the cattiness between girls. The second verse is a man's perspective, maybe on getting a girl he couldn't get," Richards said. If you plan on going to the show, Montague said to expect high energy.
"Our singer goes out in the crowd and he has been known to get in to the [mosh] pit a few times," Montague said.
Montague keeps the state of popular music right now in his mind.
"Rock is definitely in a weird situation right now," he said. "The music out there right now is simple and easily gets burned in to your brain. Good rock music is out there and people are making it, you just have to dig a little more."
Dewolf said that Taproot is no fad-follower.
"There is always going to be pop music. It's bubble gum, whatever. We always tried to separate ourselves from trendiness." Dewolf said.
As far as this tour goes, Richards said wants to get back to his roots.
"This is a different tour, we are making it unique and cool again. Get out there one last time and headline again. Get back to smaller clubs where we started," Richards said.
Montague's vision is similar.
"We work really hard when we get together," he said. "There is still something special when we get together and write music."
The band is joined on tour with From Satellite and Evans Blue.
"From Satellite is straight-ahead rock, very L.A. They drink too much like us," Richards said. "Evans Blue is a bunch of goofy Canadians and one Russian guy, kind of a dark and eerie sound."
