Letter to the Editor
Preacher's words highlight views of bigotry toward gays

Gary Cattell, the Willard Preacher, disgusts me. Walking to the Pride Week rally, I heard a rant ("LGBTA groups gather in pride," April 4). On a day that was meant to kick off a week-long celebration of acceptance and awareness for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, the Willard Preacher shouted to everyone, "Of all things I don't understand about homosexuals, one thing that bugs me the most is the fact that they think they were born gay." He thinks homosexuality is a choice.

Pride Week is supposed to create awareness and an outlet for Penn State's student body to show their love and support for the gay community. When we have people like the Willard Preacher who try to sidetrack our intentions, how are we supposed to progress as a society? We need love, acceptance and tolerance to be our utmost values at Penn State, not some self-righteous Bible thumper telling students we are something to be laughed at and scorned.
