Lions zeroing in on defense

Collegian Staff Writer

The offense scores goals, but it's the defense that holds a team together and will make or break the outcome of a game.

With only two practices this week, the No. 15 Penn State women's lacrosse team (4-5) has focused on the defensive aspect of its game and should be on its toes when it meets Loyola at 1 p.m. Sunday at Jeffery Field.

"We have been working on some stuff defensively, really focusing on our team's defense," Penn State women's lacrosse coach Suzanne Isidor said, also hinting that she might have a few secret plays up her sleeve. Hopefully these plays will help the Nittany Lions solve the problems that surfaced against No. 5 North Carolina.

On Sunday, in the second game of the ALC/ACC Challenge against the Tar Heels, they were ahead by three heading into the second half. But after the break, all facets of the team's game fell apart.

Now, though, the team has found a confidence that wasn't there before -- a confidence that it can play against the best. Now the Lions are hungry for a win.

"We've been working on it all year in practice so it's just a matter of putting it together in a game," Isidor said. "I think [the UNC game] will give us a lot of confidence going into the Loyola game, knowing we put together a great 30 minutes [on Sunday]."

Defensively, the Lions have been switching back and forth between goalies and position players, trying to find the best formula for success. Junior Cammie Jurkowsky, however, seems to have locked down the position of goalie for now and will start on Sunday.

The offense will be missing one of its key contributors. Freshman Kerry Shea is injured and will be out for the rest of the season.

Playing in seven games this season, Shea has scored 10 goals and has been a mainstay in the midfield.

"She was a good athlete. She played the midfield, so she was always in transition," senior Meg Boyd said. "She will be missed, but we have replacements."

This game is a must-win for both teams. The Greyhounds are coming off a win against George Mason on Wednesday night and are looking to get back into the rankings. The Lions need this win for a mental boost as well as a boost in the rankings, especially since they will be going up against more ranked teams in the coming weeks.

"[A win] would mean a lot. We have a good stretch of games coming up and we need a win," Isidor said.
