Publishing assault details harmful for some victims
Apparently when a person is sexually assaulted, they have not experienced enough grief. The situation itself was not traumatizing enough, so that must be the reason that The Daily Collegian felt the need to objectify the victim further. In the article, "Paxson assault under review," March 27, once again, excessive and inappropriate descriptions of the alleged 2004 assault were employed by the Collegian. Sexual assault is not a sporting event for which we, as a university, need a play-by-play account. Can we please keep in mind that the person assaulted is indeed a person? She is someone with family and friends, and she has people who love her. She is not simply a thing on which vulgar and disgusting actions were allegedly performed. Would you want people knowing such details if this happened to you, your sister, best friend or mother? It disgusts me how insensitive the Collegian really is. This is part of the reason why other victims are hesitant about reporting their own assaults. They have already been objectified and had their trust broken on levels many of us can hardly imagine. And to top it all off, they have the privilege of reading such graphic details so they too can relive their nightmares, as if once weren't enough. Christine Schad
