Collegian protest photo distorts bystander views
A picture is worth a thousand words, and like words, sometimes pictures lie. The picture in Tuesday's Daily Collegian of the "naked" protest would seem to be of a lone individual gawked at by ignorant bystanders ("Students disrobe in protest," March 28). But for those who witnessed the march, we saw about 15 semi-naked students marching with many more clothed people, as the more truthful picture in the Centre Daily Times showed. Those clothed people in the Collegian photo were not gawking at them, as they seem to be doing, but they were in fact marching with them. The difference between the Collegian and Centre Daily Times articles is stunning. It's almost like two completely different events happened. The Collegian reported that most bystanders did not understand the issue of sweatshop labor but chose not to mention that the marchers were handing out leaflets explaining it. Did the Collegian make any effort to inform its readers about the issue? No, but it could have. In contrast, the Centre Daily Times did explain that Penn State has already joined a Worker Rights Consortium against sweatshops and that the administration is still considering the "designated supplier program" that other universities have already adopted.
