Student falls 2 stories from apartment balcony

Collegian Staff Writer

A Penn State student is in critical condition after he fell from an apartment balcony early this morning.

Cory Wincek, 20, fell about 15 to 20 feet after a railing he was leaning against gave way on a second-floor balcony of University Terrace apartments, 924 Bellaire Ave, according to the State College Police Department. Police responded to the scene about 2 a.m. Friday morning, Sgt. Dana Leonard said.

Leonard said the event seemed like an “accident.” A witness to the incident said Wincek knocked on the door of his next-door neighbor’s apartment and while he was waiting for someone to answer, he leaned back on the railing, it broke, and he fell to the parking lot below.

Wincek was flown to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville and is listed in critical condition, according to a Geisinger Medical Center spokeswoman. Leonard said the police department has no further details on the incident, and the investigation is continuing.
