About 30 people met last night in the HUB-Robeson Center to discuss plans of action after the College Republicans planned to host an "Illegal Immigration Awareness Day," along with a possible "Catch an Illegal Immigrant Game."
On Wednesday night, members of Black Caucus and Latino Caucus visited the College Republicans meeting to protest the group's plan to hold a game where people could "catch" someone wearing a shirt saying "illegal immigrant" to get information on illegal immigration.
Xavier Santos (junior-mechanical engineering) told last night's audience that "we were very upset by what we heard."
Santos, a member of Sigma Lambda Beta, asked for suggestions from the attendees on how to tackle the issue.
Several suggestions included presenting counter-information and organizing activities for Hispanic Heritage Month. The need for yearlong events in the future was also discussed.
"What I heard yesterday was totally out of line," Pablo Olivares (senior-animal science) said. "It was a slap in the face."
"We should do something to truly educate people," Olivares said.
Jason Yu (senior-economics) said the issue transcends the illegal immigration issue and encompasses all minorities.
Yu, of the Asian Pacific American Caucus, also talked about the possibility of the "game" turning dangerous.
"We have to respond and educate why it's wrong," Yu said.
Santos said although some members of the College Republicans are not racist, those against the day still should have stood up.
"They're just as bad as them," Santos said. "They failed to speak up."
Olivares said continued action would be taken regarding the proposed awareness day.
"This isn't going to be the end of this," Olivares said.
Brandon Means, vice chairman of the College Republicans, who did not attend the meeting, said in a phone interview that the group was still consulting with the Latino Caucus to decide a course of action.
