Thon's dancers participate for the kids, not 48 hours

During times of transition and change, it is easy to lose sight of one's goals. Bethany Fehlinger and Ryan Pfister, as well as the students they quote in the article, "Thon 2007 cut short for basketball," March 27, have unfortunately lost sight of what the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (Thon) is really all about.

In the article's nearly 700 words, the writers allot one sentence to address how the proposed changes to Thon's structure will benefit its true stars -- the Four Diamonds Fund families. Penn State's and Thon's histories are changing, but the heart of the issue is that each dancer, committee member, captain, fundraiser, spectator and donor is working, planning, canning and giving for what? For the kids.

We shouldn't focus on the fact that Thon may be a few hours shorter, but that it is still operating under the same principles and values that it has for 33 years. We should be grateful to the 2006 and future 2007 overall committees, as they have ensured what is sure to be a long and prosperous future for Thon by making it more accessible to everyone. The last I checked we danced to find a cure, not to say how long we spent dancing.
