University owes community commitment to wind energy

I am truly pleased that Eco-Action's meeting with Gary Schultz confirmed the implementation of a student conservation internship program ("Students want eco-friendly PSU").

The people participating in this program will devise ways to get students to use less energy, which saves money and natural resources. I'm really glad that Penn State has finally committed to this program because it's a crucial step in reducing greenhouse gas emissions on campus. Although the university has set environmental goals, we could definitely achieve more in this area. The next step in becoming a greener university would be to increase our wind energy purchase to 10 percent. The university is listed as a top wind buyer based on our current purchase of 4 percent, but this rating is deceiving. Other schools buy a greater percentage of wind energy, but the actual wattage is lower because they use less energy overall. Our wind energy contract is up for renewal next year, and it would be very nice to see an increase in 2006.
