Redifer Commons: Proactive responses should occur across PSU

Hungry students pressed for time will no longer find themselves "in a pickle" during the lunch rush.

Redifer Dining Commons in South Halls will expand its facilities by adding another sandwich line -- In a Pickle Too -- to the already-popular deli In a Pickle by the start of fall 2006.

The deli's expanded area will open in the current location of Off the Ground coffee shop, which will be relocated to the low-ceiling dining area at the bottom of the staircase, to the left of the restrooms.

Also in response to the survey, the new and improved coffee stand will also update its menu to feature smoothies, ice cream and milk shake items.

The changes are in response to the results of a regular student survey issued last semester, which showed students' frustrations with the long lines at In a Pickle, Jim Richard, Redifer Dining Commons manager, said.

Thank you, Housing and Food Services, for listening to the legitimate concerns of your customers and responding promptly.

This is a great example of how the system is supposed to work: When students are having a problem, they tell the appropriate officials and a feasible solution is reached.

And this is further proof that someone actually reads those surveys, and should be even more of an incentive to spend five minutes filling them out.

Now that Housing and Food Services officials have tackled the congestion at In a Pickle and Off the Ground, maybe they can move on to other concerns, like the shortage of on-campus housing and more seating at the HUB-Robeson Center during meals.

Students need to continue to do their part and tell the administration what's on their minds, and the administration needs to continue address the feedback they gather and confront one issue at a time.
