States should impose fines for littering cigarette trash
While I don't think I have a right to ask bar owners to change their private facilities, there is another problem with smoking that bothers me. It is hard to take a step on this campus without stepping on the trash left behind by smokers. Next time you are on campus, look down at your feet and count the cigarette butts you see. You'll lose count after a while. Why is it that dog owners must clean up after man's best friend, and people who improperly dispose of trash on public property get fined for littering, but smokers are allowed to be disgusting? Why shouldn't they be subject to the same $300 fine as people who throw a soda can from their car window? Such a fine would cause smokers to be more responsible for their actions, decrease the appeal of smoking and create a more attractive campus for everyone. It would also raise money for local police force and part of the fines could be set aside for tobacco awareness programs. This is America and Penn State, not a toilet. Have some pride in the place in which you live. Brandon Hodson
