States grant sex offenders rights they do not deserve
I could not disagree more with Anna Rosalez's stance on sex offenders' rights ("Sex offender residency laws infringe upon felons' rights," March 27). In high school, a friend of mine fell victim to a man who forced her into a sexually abusive relationship for close to three years before she finally had the courage to go to the police. He was tried and sentenced to six months in jail; however, she has said that he can never do enough time to repay the damage that was done to her spiritually and emotionally. "Serving your time" and "repaying your debt to society" still does not heal the wounds of the victim, wounds that last a lifetime. Rosalez complains that her husband cannot "live his life in a normal matter" but she forgets that victims of sex crimes don't have that opportunity at all. Sex offenders should be grateful that they have any rights at all, because with the exception of murder, no crime is as hurtful or as intimate as a sex crime, and you can't give someone back that innocence.
