Ward & Ward: Current form of government stops students' voices from being heard
USG candidates: comparing the issues

Most important issues facing students

The Wards believe the students are not being heard through the current form of government.

"The student voice is not being heard," Kevin Ward (sophomore-kinesiology) said. "Dan and I are not willing to accept it."

Kevin Ward also said the administration has been turning a deaf ear to what the students have to say.

"There is not one main problem [facing students]; it's the fact that the students know that the administration does not care about them," Daniel Ward (sophomore-public relations) said. "There is no point in voicing their own opinions."

Platform goals
Reform USG through an internal review committee.
Open lines of communication between USG branches and student organizations and the administration.
Reform the textbook policy by publishing a list of required textbooks at least one month before classes start, and ensure that professors cannot require their own textbooks to be used in their classes.
Improve the effectiveness of academic adviser and student relationships.
Publish the results of the Student Rating of Teacher Effectiveness (SRTE), which students complete at the end of each semester.

Motivation for running

Kevin Ward said that he and his brother made the decision to run at the beginning of this year. As president of State College Area High School for four years, Kevin Ward said he and his brother would be the best candidates to represent the students.

"We want the student voice to be heard best, and we are the candidates to do that," Daniel Ward said. "We are confident that we can make it happen."

Daniel Ward said they decided to run for USG instead of joining the proposed advocacy group, the University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA), because they believe UPUA takes the student voice out of the government and gives the administration more control.

"USG is the most effective way to let the students make decisions," Daniel Ward said.

After the twins developed their slogan -- "Wouldn't you rather be with twins?" -- Daniel Ward said everything else about their campaign fell easily into place.

"We are expecting a lot of voters to turn out; we know we have a lot of support," Kevin Ward said.

Previous community/university involvement

Kevin Ward was State College Area High School student government president for four years and currently serves on Academic Assembly as the liaison between the Assembly and the Schreyer Honors College. Kevin Ward is an Eagle Scout and on the Springfield team for the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon.

Daniel Ward's video game talents have earned him the Penn State EA Sports NCAA College Football Challenge Championship in 2004 and 2005. He was also the National runner-up in the EA Sports NCAA College Football Challenge in 2005. The twins' Web site, www.personal.psu.edu/drw211, boasts that Daniel Ward has also touched Reggie Bush, an accomplishment, he said, any college football fan would envy.
