Nonsmoking legislation generates slippery slope
About this whole debate about legislating smoking "rights," I think a lot of anti-smokers are missing the point here ("Outdoor Smoking Bans: Government lacks power to legislate lifestyles," March 22). Yes, I agree that you have a right to be able to go out in public and enjoy the "fresh" air. That being said I would argue that this legislation of what behaviors are acceptable of people is an extremely slippery slope that is probably best not to go down. In the privacy of their own home people are now expected to keep their windows closed lest some overly sensitive person walk past their house, smell smoke and cough a fit right down to the police station. It's only a matter of time until somebody does exactly that. I know people like to laugh off such scenarios as being ridiculous and say that we needn't fear that any reasonable person could be that mean-spirited, selfish or stupid. But the point is that this is a slippery slope, and each tiny step leads us closer and closer to such an inevitable outcome. Jon Samuelson
