The Penn State student who was injured in a car accident that took the life of another student last Friday is quickly recovering, friends said.
Stephanie Lent and Allison Caimi, both 22-year-old education majors, were on their way to their daily student teaching assignment at Highland Park Elementary School in Lewistown when Lent lost control of her car.
Lent, of Fairlawn, N.J., was taken to the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. Caimi was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lent was listed in serious condition until yesterday, when Geisinger Medical Center updated her status to fair.
"She's doing really well," Lent's friend Tania Santelises (senior-nutrition) said. "We're putting together a care package, and a bunch of our friends have been visiting her."
Lent's 2003 Toyota Highlander was traveling eastbound on U.S. Route 322 when, for unknown reasons, it crossed the grass median near the Milroy exit in Mifflin County. The car passed into the right lane in front of a tractor-trailer carrying an oversized load. The truck hit the car on the passenger side.
The impact sent the car into a spin and into the path of a UPS truck traveling in the left lane, which swerved to avoid Lent's car but struck it on the driver's side, the accident report indicates.
The Pennsylvania State Police said neither truck drivers were injured.
When police arrived, the roof of the car was removed to pull Lent from the car.
Caimi, of Ridgway, was ejected from the car during the incident, according to the report.
Lent was flown to Geisinger with a broken clavicle and tibia and internal bruising. "We were all so devastated to hear about the accident because she's such a sweetheart," Santelises said. "She cares about children and her friends a lot."
Santelises said she first met Lent freshman year because they lived on the same dorm floor.
"We've kept in touch because she's just such a nice person and would do anything for anyone," she said. "I'm glad to see she's getting better fast."
