Candidates campaign

Collegian Staff Writer

Blue and yellow fliers bombarded freshmen at yesterday's "Meet the Candidates" in East Halls' Findlay Commons.

Undergraduate Student Government (USG) executive candidates Kevin and Daniel Ward and their opponents, Nick Stathes and Pat Daley, rallied their campaign teams and passed out candy while attempting to get possible votes from passing students.

"You can't underestimate the freshman vote," Daley said.

Hundreds of students passed through the campaigning zones as candidates attempted to pass out fliers and talk to as many students as possible.

"I recognized [the Nick and Pat] campaign first," Matt Forsyth (freshman-mechanical engineering) said. "Seems like they have a lot of good stuff planned for the student body."

However, Forsyth said, he is still unsure of which campaign to vote for, and he intends to learn more about the platforms on the candidates' Web sites.

Markeshia Moore (freshman-English) didn't pick up any of the fliers or free candy, but said they were a good way to advertise.

"They really put themselves out there, and T-shirts always help," she said.

While a majority of the students either refused to pick up fliers or threw them out, the candidates did talk to dozens of students.

Sarah Rothermel (freshman-division of undergraduate studies) said that she had seen both of the candidate teams advertised elsewhere and that she intended to vote for the Wards.

Kelly Quinn (freshman-biology) stopped by both of the campaigning booths with Rothermel.

"I might vote for [the Wards] because I've been bombarded by Nick and Pat Facebook stuff," she said.

Stathes said his campaign team primarily relied on T-shirts and fliers to advertise.

But he also used methods such as AOL Instant Messenger and Facebook.com to get its message out.

Andrew Smith, deputy commissioner for voting and publicity, said the student turn-out in yesterday's "Meet the Candidates" surpassed the first, which was held Tuesday in Pollock Commons.

But he added that most of the campaigning will pick up closer to election day -- next Wednesday.

Jesse Freda (freshman-division of undergraduate studies) picked up a Ward and Ward flier but said he probably would not participate in the upcoming vote.

He said he preferred the Nick and Pat slogan "Get Your Stathes/ Daley" to the Wards' "Wouldn't You Rather Be With Twins."

Christine Reinke (freshman-mathematics) said the Ward and Ward slogan was clever.

Daniel Ward said their slogan was the first concept they decided on in their campaign.

"It's a one-of-a-kind thing," he said. "We wanted to stand out in a positive way."

The campaign slogans were plastered onto balloons, fliers and posters that campaigners from each team used to draw attention to their booths and to increase votes.
