Colin said ticket sales from the Pennharmonics annual charity concert go to a different charity each year. This year, because Late Night Penn State is co-sponsoring the event, the performance is free to the audience, and instead, Pennharmonics will make a donation to Habitat for Humanity, he said. There will also be a donation jar at the performance to raise money for a community center in Louisiana that lost its piano during Hurricane Katrina.
"[The concert] gives us, the a cappella community and Penn State, a chance to do a little more with our talents, [to] give back to the community and [to bring] music across America," Greg Heleniak, director of the Pennharmonics, said.
Songs featured in the performance include "Mr. Brightside" by The Killers, "Since You've Been Gone" by Kelly Clarkson and "Crazy Train" by Ozzy Osbourne.
The Pennharmonics will perform 12 songs, some of which they've worked on since the beginning of the year, like "Movin' Out" by Billy Joel, and others which are new, like "Fix You" by Coldplay.
Dreamers member Milton Newberry (senior-wildlife and fisheries science) said the Dreamers have spent several weeks in rehearsal, performing some of their pieces during their spring break tour.
"We're singing most of the songs just to perform them, [but] 'Pennyslvania' was actually arranged by a past member of the Dreamers and a member of the group that wrote 'Another Irish Drinking Song,' " Newberry, the bass and vocal percussion singer, said.
Heleniak said the Pennharmonics have a close relationship with the Dreamers, having performed with them last October at the A Cappella Sampler.
"Of course, the Dreamers are always a hit, and we are close friends with them," Colin said.
The charity concert will also be Pennharmonics' first performance with Virginia Tech Juxtaposition, Bucknell Beyond Unison and Elizabethtown Melica. Colin said that none of these groups have ever been to Happy Valley.
"When I invite guest groups out of town to come and perform at Penn State a cappella shows, I tell them what a great setup we have and what a large crowd we draw. It's not hard to convince them to come," Colin said.
Newberry said the Dreamers have a surprise planned for their performance.
"I'll just say that we practice and have fun while doing it, and we'll be set apart from the other groups by our performance and our repertoire," Newberry said.
Heleniak said he is sure audience members will get the performance they expect and have come to demand.
"It will be a high-energy show filled with some of your favorite music done in a new way," he said.
