The Penn State women's golf team places a strong emphasis on accomplishing its goals on a golf course. But, its efforts do not stop on the turf.
On April 17, 2006, the women's golf team will be holding a "Team Build" fundraiser golf tournament. It will be held on the Penn State White Golf Course at 1 p.m. The cost will be $100 per person and $75 for Penn State students. The entry fee includes golf, cart fee, range balls, lunch and prizes.
The money received from the tournament will go towards the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity in an attempt to help rebuild the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina.
In order for the house to be built, the team is hoping to receive 60,000 from donors throughout the country. The Penn State women's golf team pledged at the very least $2,000, but it hopes the total amount will exceed its goals.
Head coach Denise St. Pierre feels passionate about the tournament and hopes the level of participation will be high.
"It is not news to anyone that there is a need to rebuild the area. We are extremely excited about this and hope that people will volunteer their participation," she said.
St. Pierre also said that involvement in the tournament is not limited to just playing. Donations will also include products, money, and sponsorship of a hole.
In addition to the money raised, collegiate women's golf coaches will head to New Orleans during the week of June 6-10, to assist in building the house.
The "Team Build" tournament not only seems to be bringing individuals together for a good cause, but the women's golf team is bonding on and off the course.
Assistant coach Sara Doell said, "The tournament is definitely bringing the team together because we are all working towards the same goal with this and in our golf game."
