The drama between housemates Svetlana and Tyler on MTV's The Real World: Key West seemed pretty one-sided last week, but Penn State alumnus John Devenanzio knows the truth.
"They really demonized Tyler," John said before last night's episode. "Svetlana grew up getting what she wanted, and Tyler was the first to call her out on her s---, making it looked unprovoked. It was really funny to see it all unfold."
He may have taken a backseat to the drama last week, but last night, he was at the forefront of it with Svetlana. Early in the episode, John questioned her motives for coming on the show with a boyfriend she wasn't into. He said he felt she used her relationship as a safety net.
"Why would you come in to the house in a relationship that you hate? It didn't mean anything to her; it was a cop out for if she didn't find anyone," John said after the show aired.
Fans of the show waiting to see which roommate would hook up with Svetlana first, Zach or John, were given a quick insight into the situation last night. Svetlana soon declared to John that she thought that he liked her only when she was drunk. He quickly agreed that Svetlana was very flirtatious and that there was a definite mutual attraction.
However, it was quiet boy Zach, the third member of the triangle, who stated that he thought something would happen soon between the two.
"Me and Zach definitely thought she was the most attractive girl in the house," John said. "We were both jockeying for her attention, and I could tell that they were trying to create a love triangle between us and I didn't want to be a part of that."
Later that night, back at the house, Svetlana finally opened up to John. She explained to him that she didn't want to be alone and was afraid of being single. John told her it would be trouble for her to be single in the house with him because of his attraction to her.
John explained that before getting to the house, he knew he didn't want to get involved with a roommate because it would create a "sticky situation" in the house.
Though John tried to keep the conversation light with Svetlana during their late-night talk, nothing could have prepared him for what she had to tell him. Svetlana explained to John that her reasoning behind staying with her current boyfriend was for the protection, as she had been raped in the past.
"I didn't think that they'd actually show that," John said. "It was the only time she opened up to me -- it was so unexpected, and we were so wasted."
John said that his three-minute on-air conversation with Svetlana actually lasted an hour.
"After that, I saw her as a vulnerable little sister and not 'hot Svetlana,' " John said. "It kind of changed the way I viewed her. I guess the truth does come out when you're drunk."
