Customers should support more bar safety measures

Jared Hurlbert was absolutely correct in his letter about bar safety ("Metal detector use by bars won't result in less crime," March 20). Metal detectors simply prevent weapons from being brought into bars, when the obvious cause of bar violence is alcohol. Everyone knows the effects of alcohol on the body, and to deny that alcohol plays a prominent role in bar violence is absurd.

Other students have stated that alcohol is not the cause of stupid behavior, but that argument holds as much water as saying the fraternities do more good than bad for the community. Look at the articles in the Collegian: How many deaths and serious injuries have been related to alcohol? The length of the line to get into a bar takes precedence over the patrons' lives any day. It is surprising that bar customers would not support a safety precaution that could possibly prevent another unnecessary student death.
