Undergraduate Student Government (USG) executive candidates will be coming soon to an area near you.
The two campaign teams will begin their "Meet the Candidates" tour of the campus at 4:30 p.m. today in Pollock Commons and will continue to visit residence areas throughout the week.
"It's basically our hope that people show up and ask us some questions," Nick Stathes, presidential candidate, said. "We'll get a chance to tell them what we think is important and to tell them why we think we're the best in the position."
Stathes (junior-political science and economics) added that he hopes students attend available campaign events, such as "Meet the Candidates" and the formal debates, because they provide students with a well-rounded impression of the candidates.
Stathes said "Meet the Candidates" is one of the more personable campaign events and will give candidates the opportunity to spread their message to large student populations.
"That's the goal -- to reach as many students as possible, and 'Meet the Candidates' is certainly no exception," he said.
Stathes added that other campaign techniques such as fliers, T-shirts and Web sites have been crucial in campaigning thus far.
Kevin Ward, presidential candidate, said he and his brother Daniel are going to use the allotted time to be available for student questions and hope to get a significant student turn out.
He added that they intend to present the same material at all locations.
"Our platform doesn't pertain to specific age groups," Kevin Ward (sophomore-kinesiology) said. "It's aimed at the Penn State population as a whole. We're not going to change our approach from location to location."
He added that "Meet the Candidates" gives students the chance to know the candidates one-on-one, an opportunity that is not as available through the debates and other campaign techniques.
Andrew Smith, deputy commissioner for voting and publicity, said each campaign team will have its own table and will be simultaneously available throughout the week.
He added that the students running for executive positions would also have members of their campaign team to reinforce their messages and to help reach more of the student body.
The subsequent "Meet the Candidates" sessions will be tomorrow in Findlay Commons, Friday in South Commons and Monday in Waring Commons. All sessions will begin at 4:30 p.m.
