Most local establishments create safe atmospheres
What's with all this hype about installing metal detectors in bars in one of the safest towns in America ("Police suggest metal detectors in bars," March 16)? In my lifetime, I've been to dozens of bars and clubs in several major cities, some of which were in the seediest of neighborhoods, and I have been to only one club that had a metal detector. What happened to Penn State student Michael Donahue was certainly tragic, but metal detectors aren't going to stop people from committing crimes. Frankly, I think the money that would be spent on metal detectors should go toward some sort of sexual assault prevention education effort. Sexual assault is a much more prevalent problem on this campus; it just doesn't get the publicity because it's vastly underreported. Brian Canada
