St. Patrick's Day in State College this year consisted of an overabundance of green beer, shamrock memorabilia and more alcohol-related police citations than a typical football weekend.
"Considering St. Patrick's Day is on a Friday, and it's decent weather, that's about right," State College Police Department Sgt. Mark Argiro said in response to the number of calls the State College police received on Friday.
Argiro said police gave out almost 30 alcohol-related citations to unruly people before noon Friday and responded to 167 calls throughout the day.
Open-container violations, fake identifications, disorderly conducts, public drunkenness and underage drinking citations kept the local police, as well as the help from the Pennsylvania State Police, busy throughout the weekend.
Some notable holiday incidents:
Friday:
1:45 a.m.: A man was observed clutching a large tree so he wouldn't fall into traffic on South Atherton Street. Police cited him for public drunkenness, and he was released to a sober friend.
2:12 a.m.: A woman was cited for public drunkenness and being a drunken pedestrian on highways after she staggered, then stumbled down Wilson Alley. She then fell on her face and knocked out a front tooth.
5:26 p.m.: Police cited a man for public drunkenness after he was found passed out in a bush on the 800 block of East College Avenue.
10:26 p.m.: A man was found passed out in a booth in McDonald's, 442 E. College Ave. The man was charged with public drunkenness and defiant trespassing because he didn't leave when he was told to.
Saturday:
1:20 a.m.: A party at Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity, 328 E. Fairmount Ave., was shut down after police responded to two separate incidents of couples having sex outside of the fraternity house. In one incident, the couple was having sex on top of a hood of a car. The police are still investigating the party.
3:36 a.m.: Police responded to a call at The Legend, 246 Highland Ave, where unknown actors broke a sprinkler head on the eastern side of the building.
The basement and the first and second floors sustained serious water damage. Every light in the west stairwell was also broken.
