The losses may have caused a little dent, but the Nittany Lions are determined to turn their luck around. The next couple of matches coming up will be filled with teams that are weaker than recent opponents.
"It's always hard to bounce back from two losses in a row, but we always have to remember that we can't change the past," junior Katelyn BeVard said. "We just have to move on and focus on the future.
"It's also positive that the matches we have coming up aren't as difficult as the matches we just lost. It will give us an opportunity to build confidence for the rest of the season."
Penn State and Lehigh had their first meeting last year, as the Lions were able to come away with a dominating win. The team is looking for the same results this year.
"I would imagine they are on the same level as last year," Penn State women's tennis coach Buffy Baker said. "It's not so much as going in and worrying about the level of the competition. For us, it's more or less taking advantage of getting another true match under our belt."
Match play has been at the forefront of Baker's mind all week. Unlike a lot of other college programs, Penn State only allows 25 matches in a season, which is too few for the sport of tennis, according to Baker. In order to make up for the lack of true matches against other colleges, Baker has used her time in practice to set her players up against one another. The most important thing is to get the competitive edge so it can be used to the players' advantage during match play.
Another thing that must be improved this weekend against Lehigh is the players' confidence. Only three players were able to call themselves victorious at the last two meets. The good thing is that it is still very early in the season, meaning a lot of time for development.
"I think some of us need that match to build confidence, especially for those of us who lost our matches," BeVard said. "Lehigh is a great opportunity for confidence and that's something that we need."
The mentality of this team is to persist on finding ways to improve its game. Analyzing opponents and remaining focused are areas that need to be worked on, according to Baker.
"We're just continuing to figure things out, and as the season goes on, we will continue improving," BeVard said. "We're figuring out how to win points and how to win matches."
